A day for the breakaway! As expected, the eighth stage, starting and finishing in Naples and covering 153 kilometers, was perfect for a strong breakaway – and today's group certainly deserves to be called strong. No fewer than 21 riders managed to escape the peloton and contest the stage win. However, the undulating course gradually tore the group apart. The sprinters Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) were sizing each other up and promptly found themselves in the chasing group. And despite some tactical maneuvering at the front, they couldn't close the gap. The Belgian Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto-Soudal) launched the sprint for the stage victory. His teammate and compatriot Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) overtook him – and nobody could hold his wheel. Thus, the 35-year-old wins his next Grand Tour stage. Little change was expected in the overall standings. However, Frenchman Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) made a significant move forward . All the favorites crossed the finish line together. Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) retains the pink jersey.
