The new Specialized S-Works Torch: A shoe to forget

24 May 2022 by Florian Nowak

Product news: The models of the Specialized Torch family are known for their features inspired by the professional models. So far, with the Torch 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0, there were three shoe models for all performance classes without having to forego comfort and performance. With the new S-Works Torch shoe, the US manufacturer Specialized is launching its latest achievement in terms of footwear and, as the S-Works title suggests, is adding a high-end model to the Touch family. The new Specialized S-Works Torch is supposed to be a further development of the S-Works 7 and combine unprecedented comfort with first-class performance.

Achieving these ambitious goals not only requires a great deal of innovative spirit, but also time. And there is a lot of that in the new S-Work Toch, because the development of the new shoe began more than two decades ago with the question: “How can the connection between rider and bike be improved?” Body Geometry was created for this purpose in 1997 to tackle problems based on scientific data and solve them through design.

The Specialized Torch family (so far)

Torch 3.0

S-Works Torch

The Torch 3.0 is most similar to the S-Works 7. The easily adjustable BOA closure and the super stiff carbon sole make the shoe a high-performance companion - at a reasonable price-performance ratio.

Torch 2.0

The Torch 2.0 puts a lot of pressure on the pedal thanks to its medium-stiff carbon sole and offers incredible comfort thanks to its super-soft upper material. This makes it the ideal shoe for long weekend rides.

Torch 1.0

S-Works Torch

With a stiff nylon sole, the Torch 1.0 offers a great compromise between performance and comfort. And optically, the Torch 1 can definitely compete with a Pro shoe.

The new Specialized S-Works Torch

As already mentioned, the basis for the new Specialized S-Works Torch was laid by the Body Geometry System. Every S-Works shoe is designed using this method and the database is now the second largest in the world for foot and shoe information. It's no wonder that S-Works cycling shoes have won thousands of professional races over the past few years, including five of the last seven UCI Elite Men's World Championships. Thus, S-Works road bike shoes are the most successful in cycling.

The S-Works Torch follows in big footsteps and is the latest development of the S-Works shoe family. Biomimicry, data science and obsessive craftsmanship have combined to create a shoe so thoughtfully engineered and therefore so comfortable you almost forget you're wearing a shoe. This comfort in combination with the best performance values is the result of years of development and characterizes the new S-Works Torch.

S-Works Torch

On closer inspection, the further developments are changes in the millimeter range, which can be traced back to three innovative technologies. All with the goal of being on the move without pain, numbness, tension or pressure.

The S-Works Torch technologies at a glance

Evolution base plate

S-Works Torch

From the more than 100.000 foot scans of the Retül program, a completely new design for the crystallized over time
carbon soles out. The most important finding was that you can best cover the spectrum of the human foot with a standard and a wide sole. That's why the S-Works Torch now comes with a carbon sole that is 7 mm or 4 mm wider than the S-Works 7. In addition to improved efficiency and power transmission, the new sole design also saves 20 grams in weight.

Asymmetrical heel cups

A problem area was also identified based on driver feedback. We are talking about the Achilles area, which requires more comfort. The solution on the new S-Works Torch is an asymmetrical heel cup that offers more space with the same stability and still ensures the usual good knee guidance.

Crafted ergonomic upper

According to the manufacturer, every millimeter of upper material, every seam and every line was questioned for the S-Works Torch. For example, the Boa closure system has been positioned slightly differently and, with its slightly slanted angle, minimizes the possibility that the ball of the foot can detach too much from the sole. This also makes the Velcro solution of the S-Works 7 superfluous, allowing the torch to offer even more performance. On top of that comes the innovative upper material, which adapts more easily to the individual foot shape and ideal power transmission with safe walking
Provides full foot support.

Specialized S-Works Torch – details at a glance

At the time of the official product presentation before the launch of the new S-Works Torch, no information about weight, price, etc. was published. As soon as we know this, the data will be added here.
