POC myelin: The world's first sustainable helmet?

July 27, 2022 by the editorial office

Eurobike POC News: Urban helmets are becoming more and more clever - and lifestyle. But what the Swedish manufacturer POC showed with its new Myelin helmet is quite unique.

The Swedes are sometimes a whole step ahead when it comes to sustainability and the environment. The helmet manufacturer POC is way ahead. The Stockholmers not only made a name for themselves through environmental awareness, but also in many respects through their innovative spirit. Both apply to the new urban helmet from Scandinavia. The Myelin is not only a very safe, stylish helmet, it also contributes to environmental protection, because on the one hand it consists of 50 percent recycled materials. On the other hand, once it has done its protective duty, it can also be dismantled in large parts – the best prerequisite for being able to recycle it as well as possible.

POC Myelin - Designed for the City

The Myelin is, as you can quickly tell even without helmet knowledge, a helmet developed for the urban landscape and commuting. It does not have large ventilation channels, as would be indispensable in a sporty helmet area. For urban use, a perforated grid on the top of the helmet, hidden under the shell made of recycled fabric, is sufficient.

Due to its harmonious construction, myelin can transport much more design. And in this case, it is not only optically very important, as we will see. First of all, the helmet makes a good impression with its simple, very tidy appearance. The all-round helmet end with the embossed logo is unusual and looks valuable. Here, too, the idea of sustainability: embossing the logo in the material is more environmentally friendly than attaching an additional sticker or something similar to the helmet. And that also makes a noble impression here.

The helmet is adapted to the head with the new Snap-Fit system, which, according to POC, is inspired by basketball caps. This allows the head circumference to be fine-tuned with a flick of the wrist and the helmet does not wobble. The fastening strap stretches over the entire helmet - this prevents anchors from having to be worked into the EPS material of the shell - here too you save on materials and gain safety. Three helmet sizes are available. The strap is made of one piece and made of - of course recycled - polyester. The stylish ring with the logo at the end of the helmet is made from recycled nylon.

The bottom line: no glue.

“We wanted to challenge the notion that a helmet cannot be safe and sustainable at the same time. … Driver safety is our top priority. But we are also committed to using our planet’s resources in a mindful way.”

Such a statement by POC on the sustainable development of myelin.

Poc News Myelin

You have to realize what the helmet manufacturer's achievement is: building a helmet without using glue was considered almost impossible. Of course, the shape realized without glued joints, but the function? POC has solved this with its "Whole Helmet Concept": Each individual component of the helmet should be developed in such a way that it optimizes the big picture at the same time. The protective capsule made of EPS, which, like the all-round end strip, has a supporting function, plays an important role here. If one day it's about recycling, you just have to cut into a few critical points with a pair of scissors and the entire helmet can be dismantled without much effort. The separation according to different materials is a basic requirement for their recycling. If it cannot be separated, recycling has already failed at the basic level, since at best it contains an impure material mix. It usually does not have the desired properties and further recycling is made impossible here.

POC has gained an additional environmental bonus here by integrating 50 percent already recycled material. The more often the cycle is run through, the better.

"Our aim is to constantly improve, but we also want to show what's possible and lead the way so that we can use all resources in the best possible way.", explains POC's Sustainability Manager Marie Sjöström. According to Poc, the myelin weighs 340 grams in size M and is now available for 100 euros.
