Nico Denz: “For me it is the absolute highlight”

August 25, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Denz interview

Cycling: Nico Denz is moving to Bora – hansgrohe for the coming season. But on the Deutschland Tour he still pedals for Team DSM. We spoke to the likeable all-rounder.

You put a young, really strong team at the start.

Nico Denz: Yes, we definitely want to sell ourselves very well. For me - as probably for the other Germans too - this is the absolute highlight. We definitely want to try to have a say.

You won a stage of the Tour de Suisse this year. When I saw the stage – Fausto Masnada was in the group with you – I thought: he can't win this. How did you still believe in yourself?

I just fought my way from flat piece to flat piece. At the top it was flat again for the last one or two kilometers ... or more or less flat. And that just suited me. Everything was just right that day, all the parameters were on my side. I just caught a good day.

You are moving to Bora – hansgrohe for the coming season.

Yes. Bora - hansgrohe is now simply indispensable in cycling. This is an absolute top team, a German team. And as a German driver you want to drive for the biggest German team at least once in your career.

You've never ridden the Tour de France in your career, but you've done the Giro d'Italia several times. Do you even prefer the Tour of Italy?

I would definitely like to have ridden the Tour de France at least once in my career.

What other goals do you have for this year and has anything already been discussed for the coming year?

No, so nothing has been discussed for next year. As I said, the Germany tour is now my absolute highlight. And then I squint with one eye in the direction of the World Cup in Australia and then we'll see what else is possible.
