Road EM: Jakobsen is crowned European Champion ahead of Démare and Merlier

August 14, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Fabio Jakobsen is the new European champion in road cycling. The Dutchman won the race in Munich ahead of Frenchman Arnaud Démare and Belgian Tim Merlier. After Pascal Ackermann fell, the Germans unfortunately had no chance of a medal in their home game.

Jakobsen ends the Italian series

After 207,9 kilometers from Murnau to Munich, the decision in the road race of the European Championship came, as expected, in a mass sprint. Fabio Jakobsen proved to be the fastest sprinter in the field. The Dutchman won ahead of Arnaud Démare of France and Tim Merlier of Belgium. The success was prepared in an exemplary manner by compatriot Danny van Poppel, who even finished fourth ahead of Sam Bennett from Ireland. The best German was Phil Bauhaus in 18th place. He stepped in for Pascal Ackermann, who had previously fallen and actually started the race as captain. With the success of the Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen, the Italian winning streak of four titles in a row broke.

Fabio Jakobsen:
“My driver Danny van Poppel did a great job. I got out of his slipstream and won. I'm super happy to be European champion now. Our plan was to be up front with two laps to go. And then Danny did the rest.”
