Cycling: Stefan Bissegger has improved every season since the beginning of his career - except for 2022. This year he was not quite able to build on his successes from the previous year. Nevertheless, his compatriots can be proud of him. The Swiss became European champion in the time trial.
Bissegger remains one of the world's best time trialists
It's really not easy for him now. To be active as a strong time trialist in a generation with Filippo Ganna and Wout van Aert – there would have been better times. But Stefan Bissegger, now 24 years old, is one of the world leaders. The Swiss won the time trial at the UAE Tour in front of Ganna at the end of February. Then he went through a low. He was only allowed to celebrate again in August, when he drove to the European Championship title in the time trial at the European Championships in Munich – ahead of compatriot Küng and world champion Ganna. He was unable to defend his title a little later in Australia, but Bissegger was then just as unavailable as Küng. And so Tobias Foss was surprisingly able to become the new time trial world champion. A missed opportunity for Bissegger, who can look back on a rather unlucky year overall.
Unlucky in the Tour de France
Stefan Bissegger reached the peak of his unhappiness at the Tour de France. At the opening time trial in Copenhagen, he fell twice in the pouring rain. In the second time trial, neither the radio nor the gear shift worked. So Bissegger had absolutely no chance even with his special time trial helmet. But he shouldn't be discouraged. Because there are still some time trials waiting for him in 2023 – and they want to be won. Maybe then we'll see him at the Giro d'Italia.
