Top 10 Drivers 2022: 7th place – Emanuel Buchmann drives well in the shade

25 November 2022 by Michael Behringer

bookman

Cycling: Emanuel Buchmann is the hope of German cycling – that was the headline in the gazette a few years ago. In the meantime, hope has diminished significantly. Nevertheless, we should appreciate the achievements of the now 30-year-old.

Buchmann convinces in the background

In which place did Emanuel Buchmann finish the Giro d'Italia this year? Certainly, even many proven cycling fans cannot answer this question correctly. Because the seventh place of the Ravensburger has moved into the background with the strong performance of his team Bora - hansgrohe. But we should still appreciate this achievement. Buchmann has placed himself entirely at the service of his captain, Jai Hindley. The Australian also won the Tour of Italy thanks to a strong Emanuel Buchmann. The fact that he then finished seventh in the overall standings is a credit. Among others, he outpaced Domenico Pozzovivo, Hugh Carthy, Alejandro Valverde and Guillaume Martin – all riders who could also fight for a podium in a Grand Tour at their best.

Many expect more - still!

In Germany, professional athletes are quickly praised to the skies. But it can also be over very quickly with the adulation. Many professionals and ex-professionals can attest to that. Emanuel Buchmann was not hit quite as badly, but he too is suffering from his past performances. Since he finished fourth overall at the 2019 Tour de France, quite a few have been expecting him to take the next step. The podium "must" be the goal - according to many. But Emanuel Buchmann doesn't have what it takes to finish in the top 3 in France. Fans and experts have to admit that. He himself has probably done this a long time ago. That's why he concentrates on his tasks as a reliable team member. And he does his job well. If he were spared illnesses and injuries now, we could expect him to achieve top results again in 2023. He can still drive into the top 10 of a Grand Tour - and he proved that impressively a few months ago.
