Top 10 Drivers 2022: 2nd place - Lennard Kämna emotionalizes the fans

30 November 2022 by Michael Behringer

Kämna Giro Etna

Cycling: Lennard Kämna swept German cycling fans away in 2022. On Mount Etna he won a stage in the Giro d'Italia - but that wasn't to be his only highlight.

Kämna can do it as a captain and as a helper

There are riders who cause emotions among cycling fans. Lennard Kämna is one of them. That's why the German is our number two in the ranking, even if the pure results don't show it. After all, we all cheered for him when he won a stage at the Giro d'Italia in May. Not just any stage, but the one with the finish on Mount Etna. Just a few days later he was part of the breakaway again. But this time he let himself fall back. Kämna sacrificed himself for his captain Jai Hindley - with success. With Lennard Kämna as his locomotive, the Australian was able to shake off his opponent Richard Carapaz. The end of the story: Hindley won the Giro d'Italia, giving the German racing team Bora – hansgrohe their first overall victory in a Grand Tour.

The bitter end at La Planche des Belles Filles

Lennard Kämna almost succeeded in his coup from the Giro at the Tour de France. At the first mountain finish he was - as on Mount Etna in Italy - on the verge of winning the stage. But on the last few meters of La Planche des Belles Filles, all hell broke out in the group of favorites. Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic managed to overtake the German. Even if he narrowly missed out on winning the stage, it is precisely these moments that cycling fans will remember for a long time.
