Cooper CR-7E test: Retro look with drive plus

19 November 2022 by Florian Nowak

Test Cooper CR-7E: The Cooper e-bike appeals with its classic British look. The Italian all-in-one engine is a perfect match. This bike is made for stylish tours at a relaxed pace.

The 2022 Cooper models remain true to the brand identity and come with a high-quality steel frame, which on all models is powered by the latest Zehus drive. The compact rear motor combines all the technology including Bluetooth connectivity, sensors and battery management and the battery itself in a not so large, polished housing, which means that the Cooper is otherwise in no way recognizable as an e-bike.

Apart from the cables routed externally on the steel frame (the Cooper is equipped with mechanical disc brakes), no cables are visible; there is no display or keypad. The system is activated for the first time by the "Bitride Connect" app. Driving information is displayed here and settings can be personalised. Once activated, the e-bike can also be used without the app if desired. From a speed of 8 km/h, simply pedal backwards twice and the motor is already activated and the preset support level is switched on. The 250 watt motor pushes gently with a maximum torque of 40 Nm, but always ensures relaxed propulsion. The battery capacity of 173 watt hours is good for up to 60 kilometers, depending on the support level and topography; The battery should be fully charged again in three hours.

Cooper CR-7E – Lively and dynamic

In addition to the support levels "Eco" and "Turbo" that are already set, there is the option in Custom mode to individualize the support and thus adapt it to your personal driving style. The intensity and duration of the support as well as the strength of the recuperation can be adjusted. The electric motor can also be used as a dynamo and, for example, feed energy into the battery on longer downhill stretches - including a practical motor brake.

The Cooper CR-7E is for everyone who wants to do more than just get around town. In addition to the luggage rack at the rear, the model also has attachment options for bags at the front and is therefore also suitable for bikepacking trips. The classic appearance of the beautiful steel frame is definitely something very special when traveling outside of urban areas.

The tidy cockpit and the hidden Zehus motor ensure a clean look, which fits perfectly with the classic steel frame. The balanced, sporty seating position is supported by the racing handlebar; the 7-speed Microshift rear derailleur enables precise gear changes in all conditions. With a 44 chainring and 11-24 cassette, however, the Cooper has a very high gear ratio, which is unfavorable given the rather low torque. Motor support quickly wears off on climbs, making the Cooper more of an e-bike for flat land. The high weight of the rear wheel also impedes propulsion somewhat.

The price of 2.799 euros includes lowriders, i.e. luggage racks for the forks, as well as battery lights of a rather simple design. On the other hand, the Brooks Cambium is an extremely high-quality, very comfortable saddle. The mechanical-hydraulic disc brakes are also a good choice.

The Cooper CR-7E pleases as an e-randonneur with a classic look, is not expensive and is well equipped in details. The Zehus motor benefits the tidy look, but you shouldn't expect too much from its performance on the mountain.
