Team introduction: Trek – Segafredo can still improve

16 December 2022 by Michael Behringer

Trek - Segafredo 2023

Cycling: Trek – Segafredo has been a constant in road cycling for many years. This is also shown by the UCI ranking of the past three years. The team has always been able to score between 6.500 and 7.500 points. We can expect something similar for 2023, because not much has changed in the squad.

Mads Pedersen is the star

As a Mads pedersen became world road champion in 2019, this was considered a big surprise. In the meantime it has to be said that the Dane is one of the best drivers in the world. In the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana he has shown that he can win both mass sprints and hilly stages. He also has to be taken seriously in the classics, as he proved with sixth place at Milan-Sanremo, seventh place at Gent-Wevelgem and eighth place at the Tour of Flanders. Undoubtedly, he is the new star of the squad, having previously ditched Vincenzo Nibali. Trek – Segafredo is supposed to hold up the Italian flag Giulio Ciccone. The Italian wasn't as strong as expected in 2022 but he still managed to celebrate a stage win at the Giro d'Italia. Also provided a highlight Juan Pedro Lopez, when he wore the pink jersey for several days in the Tour of Italy. He will have to show whether he remains a flash in the pan or is capable of more.

Only 5 departures and 3 additions

Not much will change at Trek – Segafredo in the coming year. With the Danes Alexander Kamp and Jacob Egholm, as well as the Italians Gianluca Brambilla and Matteo Moschetti and the Swiss Simon Pellaud you only give up five drivers. They are replaced by Natnael Tesfatsion, the Czech Mathias Vacek and the Belgian Thibau Nys. The first man from Eritrea could cause a sensation. He is considered a strong sprinting all-rounder and should immediately ensure top results. Otherwise, Trek – Segafredo will hope that the talents in their own ranks will make a breakthrough. The Dane deserves special attention Matthew Skjelmose, who has already won the Tour de Luxembourg this year. The Italian Antonio Tiberi and the American Quinn Simmons are also only 21 years old and will make a leap in performance. The Belgians Jasper stuyven and Edward Theuns are already a bit older, but should increase compared to 2022. Trek – Segafredo can therefore look to the future with optimism.
