Bike light in the test: Busch + Müller IXON Space – the driveway floodlight

February 1, 2023 by Florian Strigel

Busch + Müller IXON Space bicycle light

TEST: StVZO approval and ingenious route illumination - the IXON Space bicycle light from Busch + Müller is ideal for riding in very dark areas such as rural areas.

Test of the Busch + Müller IXON Space - all information & data on the bike light at a glance

The IXON Space is currently the strongest with 150 lux bike light with permanently installed battery from Busch + Müller. Your construction meets the StVZO – this means that it is glare-free like car headlights. The LED is arranged to illuminate downwards and is deflected onto the road by a cleverly developed reflector. The housing is made of sturdy plastic and aluminum. It looks correspondingly high-quality and robust. The IXON Space comes with a clamp for attachment to the handlebars. The bicycle lamp is secured with a screw cap. In addition, it can be used as a power bank, for example when the smartphone runs out of energy. Should something ever break, Busch + Müller has a great service: almost every part can be replaced and repaired. The battery can also be exchanged for €35 if it should become weak at some point.

Test: The Busch + Müller IXON Space in action

assembly and fastening

The IXON Space is mounted on the bicycle handlebars using a clamp on a rubber base. The clamp is closed with a knurled screw and can therefore be assembled and disassembled without tools. Installation is simple and intuitive - the bicycle light is ready for use within one to two minutes. Only locking the bicycle lamp on the clamp has one disadvantage: While the twist lock can be felt and operated with the hand, the process with gloves requires more practice and sensitivity. A clearer engagement of the screw cap would be desirable. Nevertheless, the bicycle light sits securely in the holder - the system absorbs blows well despite the filigree locking mechanism. The IXON Space then wobbles slightly, but remains in its original position. This means that forest roads can also be used without hesitation, without that crass disco feeling arising.

Busch + Mueller IXON Space Display
The display shows battery charge, remaining burn time or time. The brightness is controlled via the touch bar.

Service

The operation of the bicycle lamp itself is intuitive. The brightness is regulated via a kind of touch bar in eight levels. The power button is located above the brightness control and switches the lamp on and off accordingly by pressing and holding it. By briefly pressing the power button, the display changes between battery charge, remaining burn time or time. This shows again that the controls cannot always be felt with gloves. Sensitivity and practice are therefore also required here. Without gloves, however, this problem does not exist. The adjustable touch bar with 8 light levels is a nice feature, but in our opinion four to five light levels would be sufficient here.

battery & runtime

If the battery is empty, the IXON Space is charged via an outdated micro USB connection - here we would like a current USB-C connection. The connector is well protected under a large, easy-to-remove rubber cap on the back of the light. Practical: During the charging process, the display shows the remaining charging time; this is approx. 5 hours with the supplied power pack. The burn time of 2,5 hours at full power is a good value and is perfectly sufficient for everyday use. Our test shows that the burn time drops to around 2 hours in wintry temperatures below zero. However, every manufacturer should have to contend with this cold problem. Performance level 6 was enough for us for many journeys: the battery lasts more than 4 hours here. The battery supplies around 30 hours of electricity at the lowest light level - this is sufficient in brightly lit urban areas, for example.

The light field of the Busch + Müller IXON Space

The IXON Space from Busch + Müller really deserves the title of roadway floodlight: the roadway is illuminated very homogeneously. In addition, the IXON Space also illuminates the edges of the road well - so you don't rush into the dark when cornering. We noticed the soft transition from light to dark in a pleasant way. The area directly in front of the front wheel also gets enough light. The light output is very good even on completely dark forest paths - here it is not even necessary to drive with full light output. This makes the IXON Space ideal for cross-country trips or night-time gravel excursions. The range is very good at over 100 meters. In addition, despite a color temperature of 6000 Kelvin, the light is somewhat warmer than comparable LEDs in bicycle lights. The latter is easier on the eye and less dazzling.

Fair Ride seal for Busch + Müller

According to Busch + Müller, they produce exclusively in Germany - this reduces emissions due to long transport routes. During production, attention is paid to resource-saving processes: For example, waste from the plastic injection molding process is ground into granules and reused. In addition, the waste heat from production is used to heat the company. Busch + Müller produces the product packaging from FSC-certified cardboard from sustainable forestry. Last but not least, the company supplies its customers with spare parts: for simple repairs, the customer receives the parts by mail. For more complex repairs, the customer sends the product in accordingly. This guarantees that the product will function for many years.

The sustainable company policy of Busch + Müller and the supply of spare parts protect resources and the environment. For this reason, Velomotion awards the Fair Ride seal for a sustainable bicycle industry.

With the IXON Space, Busch + Müller offers an excellent StVZO bicycle light. The illumination of the route is very bright, extensive and homogeneous. The curve areas are also well illuminated. The battery life is very good at 2,5 hours at full power. This makes the IXON Space ideal for people who also travel in rural, darker regions where no additional street lighting provides light. There is a deduction for the operation – not everything can always be felt with gloves. Without gloves, the problem does not exist.
