Cycling: The last stage of the UAE Tour 2023 goes to Adam Yates and the local UAE Team Emirates. The Briton prevailed up the Jebel Hafeet ahead of Remco Evenepoel. But the Belgian didn't let the overall victory be taken away from him. Ben Zwiehoff also presented himself strongly. The German from Team Bora – hansgrohe finished ninth.
Yates confidently wins the Jebel Hafeet
The fifth UAE tour ended this Sunday. After 153 kilometers from Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium to Jebel Hafeet cheered Adam Yates (UAE) on his victory on stage seven. After strong preparatory work by his teammates, the Brit was able to break away from the group of favorites and win the section. The overall leader remained for a long time Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) on the rear wheel. But when the steepest part of the mountain was reached, Yates attacked again and got rid of Evenepoel. But the Belgian can be happy about the overall victory.
Michel Hessmann shows a strong performance
At the bottom of Jebel Hafeet were two breakaways with a lead of over two minutes over the peloton. The 21-year-old German Michel Hessmann (Jumbo – Visma) and the 36-year-old Ignatas Konovalovas (Groupama – FDJ) from Lithuania harmonized splendidly. Nevertheless, the duo was caught up by the favorites around 6,0 kilometers from the finish. UAE Team Emirates pushed the pace in the peloton to stop the attack from Adam Yates (UAE) to prepare. The British could only Sepp kuss (Jumbo – Visma) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) follow.
