Volta ao Algarve #1: Uno-X annoys the WorldTour teams

15. February 2023 by Michael Behringer

Kristoff Algarve

Cycling: The Uno-X team managed a real surprise coup at the start of the Volta ao Algarve. Wearing the jersey of the Norwegian team, newcomer Alexander Kristoff won the first stage and teammate Søren Wærenskjold was third.

Kristoff sprints into the leader's jersey

The colorful jersey of his new team Uno-X will alexander kristoff not need for tomorrow's stage. The Norwegian should hardly be annoyed about that. Because the 35-year-old will start in the leader's jersey instead. Kristoff won the opening race of the Volta ao Algarve in a bunch sprint ahead of the Belgian Jordy Meeus (Bora – hansgrohe) and his teammate Soren Waerenskjold, who started the sprint perfectly. Previously, 200,2 kilometers had to be completed from Portimão to Lagos. The sprinter teams controlled the breakaways and left no doubt about a bunch sprint.

A round trip for the class riders

The first stage of the Volta ao Algarve was overshadowed by a few falls. A driver also fell on the home stretch. A preliminary decision in the overall standings could already be made tomorrow at the Volta ao Algarve. It goes up the Alto de Foia. The tour in Lagoa ends on Sunday with a demanding individual time trial.
