Product News / E-Bike: At the Eurobike 2023, the transmission manufacturer Pinion from Denkendorf presented an innovation that is intended to revolutionize the e-bike industry. The Pinion E-Drive system with the Motor.Gearbox.Unit (MGU) as the heart, which combines gears and motor in one unit. With this system and in the service area for the specialist trade, Pinion relies on the specialist knowledge of Biketec GmbH from Switzerland and their FIT system. These two companies transfer ideas from the automotive industry to the world of e-bikes, so their collaboration is not surprising.

Pinion MGU E-Drive System in the first test: The beginning of a new e-bike era?
Test / E-Bike: With the Pinion E-Drive System or the Pinion MGU, there is an exciting new name in e-bike drives. As a combination of gear shift and mid-engine, it is currently unique on the market. A classic shifting system is therefore superfluous, whether on a city bike or an E-MTB. We looked closely at the new system […]
Pinion's Motor.Gearbox.Unit (MGU) is a bang in the bicycle industry. The German manufacturer has achieved what many e-bikers have been waiting for for a long time - the combination of motor and gear shift. The MGU combines a powerful electric motor with proven Pinion transmission technology and an electric gearshift with 9 or 12 gears, all in a compact design. In terms of both weight and power, it can compete with and even surpass many of the most common mid-engines and gearboxes on the market. In addition, the Pinion MGU should work almost wear-free and require very little maintenance.
FIT as a partner for service and integration
However, since a drive unit alone does not make a complete drive, a strong partner is needed to be able to offer bicycle manufacturers an attractive overall package. Pinion found this partner in Biketec GmbH and in their FIT system. In addition to the batteries, the Swiss also contribute control panels and displays and take care of the connectivity of the system. Numerous digital functions are networked via the FIT E-Bike Control app and can be controlled via it. Individual engine and transmission settings are possible for the Pinion MGU, for example.
Until now, FIT components were known in combination with motors from Brose and Panasonic. With the integration of the Pinion MGU, the FIT system is expanding its portfolio. Similar to Pinion, Biketec GmbH also follows approaches from the automotive industry in order to create a coherent complete system in combination with the best partners on the market.
“We are grateful and proud to partner with Pinion and to be part of something so revolutionary. We are excited to see how the market will react to the MGU and the response it will bring.”, says Ivica Durdevic, CEO of Biketec GmbH.
By integrating the Pinion MGU into the FIT system, Biketec GmbH also takes on the entire service business. This makes it the first point of contact for specialist retailers to provide comprehensive and fast advice and guarantee service. Specialist dealers can easily order spare parts via the FIT E-Shop after a one-time registration, which also acts as a central contact point with access to the service tools.
