Tour de France #9: Michael Woods wins on the Puy de Dôme

July 9, 2023 by Michael Behringer

Israel - Premier Tech Woods Tour de France

Cycling: Michael Woods is the winner of the ninth Tour de France stage. The Canadian won on the Puy de Dôme as a breakaway ahead of Mathieu Burgaudeau of France. The class riders crossed the finish line with a clear deficit. Tadej Pogacar managed to gain valuable time in the last 1,5 kilometers with an uncompromising attack.

Woods wins his first stage of the Tour

He has already won two stages at the Vuelta a Espana, but at the Tour de France he was never allowed to celebrate a day's victory. Today was the day. Michael Woods (Israel - Premier-Tech) takes a break on the Puy de Dôme Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) through. Everything looked a long time Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) as the winner. But the American broke away on the last 1.000 meters so that he was relegated to fourth place.

14 breakaways with a big lead

Today, on the 182,4-kilometer stage from Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat to the Puy de Dôme, 14 men originally formed the breakaway group. Since only the Jumbo – Visma team controlled the main field and no other team really wanted to follow suit, it was clear early on that the breakaway group could decide this prestigious day's victory among themselves.

Pogacar leaves Vingegaard

More than ten minutes after the battle for the stage win, the spectators were still able to enjoy the battle of the ranking riders. Through the tempo work of Adam Yates (UAE) and Sepp kuss (Jumbo – Visma), strong climbers gradually fell out of the group of favourites. 1,5 kilometers before the finish then sat Tadej pogacar (UAE) his attack. jonas vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma) was able to follow at first, but then had to give up. The Dane lost time but remains in the yellow jersey. Also Jay Hindley (Bora – hansgrohe) suffered a small defeat. The Australian lost part of his lead in fourth place. But the loser of the day is david gaudu (Groupama – FDJ). The hope of the French says goodbye to the fight for the podium.

Wow, what a climb by #Canada @rusty_woods to win Stage 9 of @LeTour.
