Vuelta a Espana #5: Groves takes his second stage win

August 30, 2023 by Michael Behringer

Grove's Vuelta Ganna

Cycling: Kaden Groves is the sprinter of the 2023 Vuelta a Espana. The Australian also won stage five in the bunch sprint – this time ahead of Italy's Filippo Ganna.

Grove's Vuelta Ganna

Groves wins just ahead of Ganna

Almost would be Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) pulled off a big surprise. But the Italian time trial specialist didn't win the mass sprint on the fifth stage of the Vuelta a Espana after all. He had to Caden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck) beaten. The Australian has thus already won his second stage in this year's Tour of Spain. He is also extending his lead in the points classification, even if he was unable to win the intermediate sprint just before the finish. There sat surprisingly Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) through. The man in red extends his lead in the overall standings by 6 seconds.

Dunbar & Coquard also give up

Yesterday's mass fall just before the finish claimed three more victims. Kobe Goossens (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty), Ruben guerreiro (Movistar) and Bryan coquard (Cofidis) could not start today's fifth stage over 186,2 kilometers from Morella to Burriana. It then still has in the neutralized zone Eddie Dunbar (Jayco - AlUla) caught. The Australian, who finished seventh overall at the Giro d'Italia this year, was injured so badly in his fall that he was unable to continue. Only a short time later, the team reported that they also had stomach problems Filippo Zana (Jayco – AlUla) has to start the journey home.
