Out of Bot 2 review: Sports glasses with electronic lenses

August 2, 2023 by Florian Nowak

Test: The Italian glasses manufacturer Out of caused a stir with electronic glasses. The idea behind it is that the photochromic IRID lenses adapt to changing light conditions in fractions of a second using only the energy of the sun. With the Out of Bot 2, the groundbreaking technology enters the second generation. We took a closer look at the model.

With the Out of Bot 2, the photochromic electronic IRID glasses go into the second round and should ensure ultimate visual comfort and clarity during outdoor activities. The innovative sports sunglasses are made in Italy from carbon-reinforced Grilamid and are incredibly light, weighing just 29 grams.

The great feature of the latest Out of glasses, however, are their lenses. The so-called IRID glasses can adapt completely independently from filter category S1 to S3 in just 0,09 seconds. In our test, we found this switching to be in real time, because this short delay of fractions of a second is not even noticeable. We also found the extremely even color change of the lenses very pleasant, which always ensured a good view without darkening too much or too little. This mechanism works through an electronic reaction, but without batteries or rechargeable batteries, but solely with the energy of the sun

The Italian manufacturer has also developed completely new mirror coatings for the Bot 2, which, in conjunction with the LC film, should ensure an even clearer view. We found it particularly pleasant that the internal reflections were reduced by 50%.

In addition, the Bot 2 is designed in such a way that it can also accommodate optical glasses thanks to the easy-to-mount clip-in function. This feature is ideal for those who require prescription lenses and also want to take advantage of the Bot 2's photochromic lenses.

Patent received the Silmo d'Or in 2022

The technology behind the Bot 2's photochromic electronic lenses has been patented by Out of and even won the prestigious Silmo d'Or in 2022. This recognition underscores the innovative nature of the technology and the impact it can have on the outdoor sports market.
