Cycling: Arnaud De Lie won the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec. The young Belgian won the one-day race in Canada in a sprint in a large group.
De Lie wins in a demanding sprint
The Canadian one-day race starts and finishes in Quebec Arnaud de Lie (Lotto – Dstny). The young Belgian was able to sprint ahead of the New Zealander in a large group Corbin Strong (Israel – Premier Tech) and the Australian Michael Matthews (Jayco – AlUla). Strong already looked like the sure winner before his legs fell asleep in the last 20 meters. Last year's winner Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R - Citroën) attacked around four kilometers from the finish - a little earlier than in 2022 - but this time he was unable to maintain his offensive advance to the finish line.
Runaway quartet with no chance
In very high humidity - but at least without rain - the professionals had to cover 201,6 kilometers at the GP Cycliste de Quebec. At the start of the race, after a few attacks, four riders were able to break away from the peloton. Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal – Quick Step), Gianmarco Garofoli (Astana) and David lozano (Novo Nordisk) were only able to enjoy a small lead. The quartet was reinstated just 44 kilometers from the finish.
Sunday: GP Cycliste de Montréal
The professionals who started today are mostly staying in Canada. The next one-day race will take place here on Sunday. The GP Cycliste de Montréal has a much more demanding profile and is suitable for punchers and hill-hardened sprinters. Last year, Tadej Pogacar won this race ahead of Wout van Aert.
