September 12, 2023 by Michael Behringer

Vingegaard Vuelta

Cycling: Jonas Vingegaard won the 16th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Dane has moved past Primoz Roglic in the overall standings. Sepp Kuss remains in the red jersey.

Vingegaard drives safely to victory on the day

Everything is the same at the Vuelta a Espana – even after the second rest day. Jumbo – Visma also dominated the 120,1 kilometer section from Liencres Playa to Bejes at will. On the final climb, Attila Valter (Jumbo – Visma) initially kept the pace high before jonas vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma) started his attack. The competition looked at each other and didn't follow. So the Dane was able to safely celebrate his next stage victory. Since the UAE Team Emirates reacted very late, Vingegaard's lead became so large that he almost took the overall lead. Drove behind it Finn Fisher Black (UAE) in second place. leader Sepp kuss (Jumbo – Visma) only lost four seconds to the biggest competitors from the other teams.

Jumbo – Visma really wanted the stage win

It took a long time today until the day's breakaway group was formed. At first, Ineos Grenadiers kept the tempo high because they really wanted to be in the breakaway group. Six riders later pulled away, including Caden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck), who secured the intermediate sprint. Due to Jumbo-Visma's high speed, it quickly became clear that the escape would come to an end. The Dutch team really wanted to win today's stage because they were teammates Nathan van Hooydonck was involved in a serious car accident today. He suffered a heart attack while behind the wheel and was seriously injured. His pregnant wife, who was sitting next to him, escaped with minor injuries.

David de la Cruz has to give up the Vuelta

The Vuelta a Espana ends bitterly after the second rest day David of the Cross from (Astana). The Spaniard has to give up the tour due to illness. This was extremely successful for the 34-year-old. After 15 stages he was in eleventh place in the overall ranking. Also no longer there Wely Hagos Berhe (Jayco – AlUla) from Ethiopia.
