Vuelta a Espana #21: Groves wins the final stage in Madrid

September 17, 2023 by Michael Behringer

Grove's Vuelta Madrid

Cycling: Kaden Groves won the final stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Australian didn't rely on a bunch sprint, but went into the breakaway group himself - with success. Sepp Kuss can be happy about the overall victory. His teammates Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic complete the podium.

Groves goes on the offensive and rewards himself

Anyone who expected a boring mass sprint on the final 101,5 kilometer stage from Hipódromo de la Zarzuela to Madrid was disappointed. Because the Vuelta a Espana ended with an exciting pursuit race. With Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick Step), Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers), Nico Denz (Bora – hansgrohe), Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe), Caden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck) and Rui Costa (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) six extremely strong riders broke away from the peloton and fought back bravely. They were caught again in the last 500 meters, but when Evenepoel opened the sprint, Groves got on his rear wheel - and won. After the intense race to catch up, there was no strength left in the peloton. Second place went to Ganna ahead of Denz.

Sepp Kuss wins the Vuelta a Espana

Before the start of the Vuelta a Espana, it would not have been a bold prediction to bet on a rider from the Jumbo – Visma team. However, that it is Sepp kuss will act – no one would have thought of that. But the American can actually look forward to an overall victory in a Grand Tour for the first time. Although there were questionable actions by his teammates at one stage or another, ultimately they did jonas vingegaard and Primois Roglic sacrificed for him and finally gave him the red jersey. The mountain classification, however, is important Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step), the sprint classification Caden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck) and the junior ranking Juan Ayuso (UAE).
