The Return of the Patriot: Orange presents the first model from the EPO series with a Bosch drive

9 October 2023 by Christian Ettl

The name Patriot has a long tradition in the history books at Orange Bikes. Already at the beginning of the millennium it was used by the legendary Team Animal, for one of the most iconic DH bikes in Orange World Cup history. Versatile, capable and robust, the Patriot has been the first choice of many Orange Gravity riders, whether racing downhill or in search of the best alpine technical trails. These attributes are all said to be reflected in Orange's brand new EPO (Electric Powered Orange) model.

The Patriot's frame is based on the Strange Powerlink suspension system, which is already successfully used on the Stage 7 and Switch 7 models. The performance of this system is perfectly tailored to powerful e-bike drives where grip is crucial.

Orange E-MTB with Bosch drive

Another first for Orange is that the new Patriot is the first EPO model with a Bosch drive unit - the Performance Line CX. This drive unit is one of the most advanced on the market and, according to the makers, fits perfectly with the Orange driving philosophy.

The Patriot combines agile handling and great confidence in demanding terrain. If you're thinking about a gravity bike with an integrated shuttle, we're on the same page. The Patriot comes with a Mullet wheelset: 29″ at the front and 27,5″ at the rear. With 170 mm of travel at the front and rear, it can handle rough terrain. This combination of large front wheels and a more agile rear structure has proven itself and is becoming increasingly popular. The Patriot's geometry offers confident trail performance with a slack 63° head angle, a steep 76° seat tube angle and a generous reach (481 mm in size L).

A special feature for the EPO version of the Patriot is that the bottom bracket has been raised by 5 mm, which, together with the 165 mm crank arms, provides more ground clearance and minimizes pedal strikes when climbing technical trails.

The Strange Powerlink system offers a progressive spring characteristic that should give the Patriot some serious reserve and allows the use of air or coil shocks depending on the rider's preference. The Patriot features a 205×65 Trunnion shock mounted low in the frame to lower the bike's center of gravity and provide neutral weight distribution while riding. The linkage and shock mount are made from a mix of titanium and aluminum, which increases durability.

The Patriot is handcrafted in the UK and features high-quality aluminum monocoque construction. The frames are individually custom-made from flat sheets of aviation aluminum and seam-welded. CNC-milled aluminum components are used, which are carefully modeled and analyzed. All production steps take place in the UK, ensuring high quality and full end-of-life recyclability.

The new features of the Patriot frame are based on careful analysis and feedback from test riders. A new 49/56 Zero Stack head tube standard improves stiffness and creates space for a water bottle in the front triangle. The asymmetric rear triangle design similar to the Switch 7 allows for increased vertical stiffness while adjusting lateral compliance.

The Patriot features the Bosch Performance CX drive system that delivers impressive performance. With up to 85 Nm of torque, it accelerates quickly and intelligently adapts its support to your driving style. It is controlled via the compact Purion 200 display and the Flow eMTB app, which offers numerous functions and configuration options.

There is a Bosch Power Tube 750Wh battery in the down tube, which provides sufficient range. This battery is easily replaceable and can be easily charged. In the event of problems, Bosch offers excellent customer service to get drivers back on track quickly.

The new Patriot from Orange combines the legendary history of the Patriot with the latest e-bike technology and craftsmanship from Great Britain. A versatile bike for adventurous riders. To start, Orange is offering the Patriot LE as a complete bike:
