The DT Swiss A1800 Spline in the test: First-class aero performance made of aluminum

19 November 2023 by Florian Nowak

Test: A few weeks ago, the Swiss wheel specialist DT Swiss presented a range of new models. What is special is that these wheels, which are designed for the best performance in various areas, still come with an aluminum rim. The DT Swiss A 1800 Spline 30 wheels are also a real highlight among the new products, because the rim shape has been aerodynamically optimized for this model, which is rarely or never the case with aluminum models. We tested the new DT Swiss aluminum aero wheels and show you what the A1800 Spline 30 can do.
Cyclists from all areas are becoming more and more ambitious, even if it's just after-work rides or Sunday rides, and for this reason they are placing ever higher demands on the material. However, not everyone wants to use professional material or put too much strain on their wallet. The DT Swiss A 1800 Spline 30 wheels are aimed at exactly these riders because they combine aerodynamic performance and reliability on the road, as these aerodynamically optimized aluminum wheels combine Swiss engineering with high-quality materials to offer a first-class riding experience.

DT Swiss A 1800 Spline 30 – Aerodynamic design made of aluminum

The DT Swiss A 1800 Spline wheels were specifically designed for aerodynamic efficiency. The deep profile 30mm rim design reduces air resistance and ensures a smoother ride at higher speeds. In addition to the rim, internal nipples and aero spokes ensure optimal aerodynamics.

DT Swiss is known for its high-quality rims, spokes and hubs and their precise workmanship. The A 1800 Spline wheels are no exception. Even under demanding conditions, the aluminum aero wheels should withstand a number of challenges. A small visual flaw that caught our eye is a seam on the rim that sticks out a bit, otherwise we have nothing to complain about at first glance.

The technical design of our test wheel also gives little reason for negative lines, because the wheels are centered without lateral or vertical runout and have high spoke tension. Paired with attractive lateral stiffness, this results in very precise handling and direct response, which is reminiscent of the DT Swiss top models made of carbon.
Thanks to the tubeless ready setup, the wheels were quickly made ready to ride, but after a short time we had to seal them again. Nevertheless, we were able to benefit from the advantages of improved puncture protection while driving and were impressed by the smoother rolling behavior. Also much more comfortable than many other aero wheels are the 30mm high aluminum rims, which cannot be thrown off track by crosswinds or higher speeds.

Only the generous weight of almost 1700 grams has a negative impact here and there on the driving experience compared to the significantly more expensive carbon models. This is particularly noticeable uphill, but also when starting off. Nevertheless, the DT Swiss A 1800 Spline roll pleasantly quickly over long distances and, thanks to their robust setup, cover a wide range of applications. Overall, they offer a very successful combination of aerodynamics, robust construction and attractive price-performance ratio and are therefore simply solid wheels with a high-quality construction.
