Many professionals develop well at Intermarché – Wanty
With 21 wins this season, the Intermarché – Wanty team surprised many experts in 2023. But good transfers from previous years have shaped the Belgian team into a competitive WorldTour squad. The professionals from Intermarché – Wanty are never among the favorites. An active and aggressive driving style is therefore necessary in order to achieve success. The team also achieved four victories in the highest cycling class. The German George Zimmerman won a section of the Critérium du Dauphiné. Biniam Girmay from Eritrea celebrated in the sprint against Wout van Aert at the Tour de Suisse. Mike Teunissen from the Netherlands didn't have a good year, but was able to celebrate a stage win on the Renewi Tour. But the biggest success of the year came from a 37-year-old from Portugal. Rui Costa won a stage at the Vuelta a Espana. In addition to Zimmermann, the sprinters in particular have taken a step forward. The development of Gerben Thijssen, Arne Marit, Madis Mihkels and Hugo Page can only be described as positive.
2024: Exciting youngsters join the team
The word has now gotten around that you can develop really well as an aspiring driver in the Belgian team Intermarché – Wanty. Long gone are the days when the team was described as too weak for the WorldTour. The current transfers also prove this. With Rui Costa, Niccolo Bonifazio, Loic Vlichen, Sven Erik Byström and Aime De Gendt The team is giving up some drivers who will be 30 years old or significantly older in the coming season. The slightly younger ones Laurens Huys and Julius Johansen were not convincing and had to leave the team due to poor performance. At the same time, Intermarché – Wanty is setting the course for a successful future with the new additions. None of the five newcomers are older than 24. The top talents are particularly worth mentioning Alexy Faure Cheers and Francesco Busatto. The Frenchman is considered a strong climber and GC hope of the future. And the Italian is one of the strongest punchers of his year. At 19 and 21 years old respectively, they bring fresh impetus to the team.
