Good doesn't always have to be expensive: Van Rysel Winter 900 cycling gloves

20 December 2023 by the editorial office

Van Rysel Winter 900: The sporting goods manufacturer Decathlon sells its products for the bicycle market under names such as B’TWIN, Rockrider and Triban. The signature brand Van Rysel has joined in 2019. It is intended to address the area of ambitious racing cyclists. We took a closer look at the winter gloves.

Anyone who regularly shops at Decathlon will have noticed that all products are numbered. Most of the time there are values like 100, 550 or 900. But what's behind it? The number reflects the level of quality. The higher the number, the better quality the product is. In our test case, we can expect a high-quality product from the Van Rysel winter gloves 900.

Van Rysel Winter 900

When we held the Van Rysel in our hands for the first time, its texture reminded us strongly of that Shimano Infinium Primaloft Gloves, which we also recently introduced to you. But instead of Primaloft and GoreTex Infinium technologies, Technogel and Softermic lining can be found here on the list of contents. All in-house developments by the Decathlon team from Lille, France. But no matter which technologies are used here, the bottom line is that the glove, like many others, is made of various synthetic plastics.

But back to the essentials. How is the glove constructed? Long shaft with Velcro strap, palm made of synthetic leather with gel padding, silicone prints on the thumb, index and middle fingers, 2 reflector strips and a wiping finger. Van Rysel did his homework here and thought about the basic requirements for a winter glove. The whole thing is available at a reasonable price.

Van Rysel Winter 900

Can the Van Rysel Winter 900 keep up with the higher-priced ones?

When it comes to the workmanship of the Van Rysel 900, there is a noticeable difference compared to high-priced gloves. There are sometimes simple material transitions or seams that are not XNUMX% clean. The one or other material used also raises doubts about its longevity. But that's complaining at a high level. This does not affect the functionality.

With the help of the Velcro strap you can easily get into the glove. Which feels very pleasant inside. The insulation surrounds the back and palm of the hand. However, the latter is thinner, which provides a direct grip on the handlebars. The sporty, tight fit and sufficient freedom of movement also contribute to the “feel good”. He also likes the handlebars. Direct grip feeling, great operation of the gears and brakes. The thermal insulation at temperatures around the freezing point is also very good. That puts a price/performance grin on our faces. Until it starts to rain. The Achilles heel of the Van Rysel 900 is the generous wiping finger material on the thumb. Compared to the water-repellent outer material made of softshell, the wiping finger quickly absorbs water and transports moisture into the inside of the glove.
