Designed for uncompromising riders looking for the best: Canyon winter cycling gloves

8 January 2024 by the editorial office

Canyon winter gloves: The direct seller Canyon doesn't just have bicycles in its range. In addition to bicycle accessories, the Koblenz company offers the entire repertoire of cycling clothing. We took a closer look at their winter gloves, which are available in 5 finger and lobster versions.

Canyon's self-developed winter gloves are designed to work on particularly cold and wet days. To do this, they have equipped their glove with PrimaLoft Gold insulation and a waterproof eVent membrane made of Teflon. Canyon promises the gloves that they have achieved the optimum in heat and moisture management and thus maintain well-being while driving. The winter gloves belong to the Canyon Defend+ system, designed for uncompromising riders looking for the best.

The 5 finger version in the test

This promise sets high expectations for our test. When we first look and feel, we first notice that the cleanly crafted gloves are quite simply implemented. There are no reflectors or other applications on the backhand, apart from a small logo. The palm, on the other hand, is completely lined with PU synthetic leather, and the index and middle fingers are suitable for touchscreen operation. You can easily get into the glove via the ribbed inner cuff. Once you put it on, you immediately get warm hands. The isolation around the fingers is noticeable. This is comparatively thick. There is also plenty of space between the fingertips and the outer tips of the gloves. Flexing the fingers is slightly affected by the insulation. It is also noticeable that the material thickness of the terry cloth insert on the wiping thumb is kept quite thin. This raises doubts about the longevity of the use.

On the bike, the grip on the handlebars is not very pronounced due to the thick insulation. What is positive is that the insulation layer does not move between the hand and the handlebars. Operating the shift lever and brake is also quite easy despite the design. On our test tours, we tested the glove not only on rides below freezing point but also on warmer, wet days above 5°C. The aim was to test the advertised heat and moisture management. The result is consistently positive; the gloves were able to keep your hands warm in every situation without overheating. The waterproof membrane also reliably protected against constant rain.

Who and what purpose is the Canyon winter glove suitable for?

Even though the Canyon winter gloves work well in temperatures well above freezing, their main area of application is on really icy days, where an indirect grip feeling on the handlebars can be tolerated.
