Giro d'Italia 2024: The route & all stage profiles at a glance

The starting signal for the Giro d'Italia 2024 will be given in Venaria Reale. 140 kilometers have to be covered to the finish line in Turin. The Maglia Rosa and the stage win probably won't go to a pure sprinter, because the hills just before the finish will make life difficult for them. A sprint from a decimated peloton or even a spectacular solo coup is more realistic.

The UAE Team Emirates has on the 1st stage took the reins straight into his hands and made the race difficult. The stage victory goes to the Ecuadorian champion Jhonathan Narvaez ahead of the strong German Maximilian Schachmann. Tadej Pogacar comes third in the stage, but is already gaining valuable seconds on his GC opponents.

The classification riders have to be there in full on the second day of the Giro d'Italia 2024. From San Francesco al Campo to the pilgrimage church of Oropa there is an altitude difference of around 2.300 meters. The final climb is 11,8 kilometers long and is on average 6,1 percent steep, although shortly before the finish you also have to climb sections with a gradient of around 9 percent. If you want to win the Giro, you have to be at the front. But there shouldn't be any big gaps yet.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE) got serious straight away on the second stage, won the mountain finish and took over the pink jersey. Behind him, Daniel Martinez (Bora – hansgrohe) takes second place – also thanks to a strong performance from his German noble helper Florian Lipowitz (Bora – hansgrohe).

On the third stage of the 2024 Tour of Italy, the sprinters can finally look forward to their chance. From Novara to Fossano there are mainly flat kilometers to complete. But be careful: here, too, there are a few waves to overcome in the last quarter of the race. A sprinter in top shape should survive this without any damage.

In Fossano, Belgian Tim Merlier (Soudal – Quick-Step) celebrates after a thrilling finale. In the mass sprint he came out just ahead of Jonathan Milan (Lidl – Trek). Previously, Tadej Pogacar (UAE) and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) surprised with their attack.

A bunch sprint is also expected on the fourth day of the Giro d'Italia. In Andora there is no doubt that one of the fastest men in the world will take the stage win.

Ouch! After two crashes, Biniam Girmay (Intermarché – Wanty) unfortunately has to give up the Giro d'Italia. The stage win goes to Jonathan Milan (Lidl – Trek) after Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) tried an attack shortly before the finish.

Day five is again something for the sprinters. The two mountain classifications will not be able to bring about a selection. The day's victory will be awarded in the mass sprint.

Result:
No mass sprint: in the end the escapees celebrate in Lucca. Benjamin Thomas prevails in the four-man sprint and finally ends the dry spell of his team Cofidis. The French team had to wait until today for their first win of the season.

At first glance, you might think that there will also be a sprint decision on the sixth stage - but that's far from the case. 11,6 kilometers of gravel have to be completed in the second half of the race. A small Strade Bianche is driven. The classic car hunters are looking forward to this day - and the classification drivers are afraid of losing a lot of time.

In the 40,6 km long time trial from Foligno to Perugia, the specialists are called upon to fight against the clock. But this course is also suitable for mountain and classification riders, as it goes uphill again at the end.

Immediately after the start in Spoleto, the drivers get a foretaste of what awaits them over the next 152 kilometers. On the way to Prati di Tivo it's almost all uphill and downhill. The highlight of the eighth section is the finish in the ski and mountain holiday resort in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The final climb is 14,7 kilometers long and is on average 7,0 percent steep. This is where the wheat is finally separated from the chaff.

When you think of Naples, you think of good Italian cuisine: Spaghetti Napoli and Pizza Napoletana have made this city and this area famous. But today the focus is on the professionals of the Giro d'Italia 2024. And the stage could be more exciting than it looks. Because a mass sprint is not guaranteed. In the last quarter of the race there are four challenging hills to complete.

Today all eyes are on the municipality of Cusano Mutri in Campania, which has a population of almost 4.000. Because this mountain arrival has it all. With a length of 18 kilometers and an average gradient of 5,6 percent, the values ​​sound half as dramatic, but that is deceptive. The ascent includes two small descents - and that reduces the percentage. The unrhythmic climb will cause further gaps in the overall ranking.

There is little to analyze on the eleventh stage. A classic mass sprint is expected in Francavilla al Mare. Are all the sprinters still in the race?

Day 12 of the Giro d'Italia 2024 is also not for the GC riders. The slightly wavy profile is perfect for outliers.

It doesn't get any flatter. There are no obstacles to overcome from Riccione to Cento. A classic mass sprint awaits us without much action along the way. Who even dares to join the group?

Time trial! If it's tight in the GC, valuable seconds have to be gained today. In the fight against the clock, 31,2 predominantly flat kilometers have to be covered.

Before the second and final rest day of the Giro d'Italia 2024, the climbers have to prove themselves again. Up to Livigno you have to climb the dreaded Mottolino. In order to reach the ski resort, a few mountains have to be conquered beforehand. Among other things, the Mortirolo and the Foscagno. At the end it's another 4,7 kilometers at 7,3 percent. Have fun!

Chaos could break out early on the 16th section. The Stelvio is crying out for an epic attack. If no one dares to do that, the decision on this stage will only be made in the last quarter of the race.

Even on stage 17, the riders don't have time to warm up. From kilometer 0 it goes straight uphill and then downhill. And it stays that way until the finish line. We look in vain for a flat kilometer here. A bad day could mean the end of this hidden royal stage.

Finally breathe again. In Padova a sprinter will celebrate the day's victory. After the tough stages of the previous days, today's section almost seems like a recovery.

The 19th section is perfect for a sensational breakaway victory. The profile is too light for the classification riders and too heavy for the sprinters. Here a large group will break away early and decide on the day's victory among themselves.

With a length of 18,2 kilometers and an average gradient of 8,1 percent, Monte Grappa is one of the hardest mountains in the Giro d'Italia. And the drivers can be happy because they won't just have to defeat this monster once today, but twice. A bad day shortly before the end of the tour could be fatal here.

The final stage of the Giro d'Italia 2024 is a pure triumph for the winners. Finally, the Sprint Royal takes place in Rome.
