Winter gloves from the jersey specialist: Kalas Nordic Z

16 January 2024 by the editorial office

Kalas Nordic Z

Kalas Nordic Z: The Czech family business Kalas offers tailor-made cycling clothing from Europe. With Nordic Z you are sending a winter glove with a two-finger design into the race. Our test shows how well it performs.

The Nordic Z is supposed to work for temperatures around freezing point. For this reason, emphasis was placed on good insulation and freedom of movement. The two-finger design plays a key role here, as the index and middle fingers are separately insulated for operating the brake and the remaining two fingers are combined for better thermal performance. In principle, the design of the Nordic Z is between 5 fingers and lobster gloves. When it comes to the materials chosen, Kalas does not use well-known components, but promises to act sustainably and to ensure short transport routes and minimization of production waste.

Kalas Nordic Z

Anyone who holds the Nordic Z in their hands will immediately realize that the glove is made for icy cold days. The Nordic Z is insulated all around, and the materials chosen give a robust impression. The palm of the hand is lined with velor and also has silicone prints in the middle area for a better grip. The thumb is largely covered with a soft fleece and is therefore ideal as a wiping thumb. We really like that the back of the hand has a reflective fabric in the front area. This brings increased safety in road traffic without affecting the discreet appearance. The Kalas lettering is also reflective.

The advantages of both construction methods combined in one glove.

The Nordic Z is easy to put on and feels good inside. The generously dimensioned insulation covers the entire hand up to the shaft. This is designed to be sufficiently long and has an integrated elastic band to prevent external influences from penetrating. The fit is perfect, although it should be mentioned that the little and ring fingers are separated on the inside. This means that there is an insulating layer between the two fingers. This gives additional space for heat to be stored. An advantage over 5 finger gloves.

Compared to Lobster gloves, the advantage is that the Nordic Z can also be used on the bike for one-finger braking. In general, the glove looks good in use. The indirect grip feeling is acceptable, but your hands stay pleasantly warm and protected. Operating the gears and brakes is also easy.

Who and what purpose is the Kalas Nordic Z suitable for?

With the Nordic Z, the focus is on isolation. If you're looking for maximum warmth and can't wear a classic lobster due to a one-finger brake, you should test the Nordic Z.
