KTM Macina Sport SX with Bosch SX in the test: Finally a lightweight e-trekking bike!

16 January 2024 by Michael Faiss

KTM Macina Sport SX

Test / E-trekking bike: The KTM Macina Sport SX e-trekking bike caused a stir when it was presented at last year's Eurobike. With its combination of low weight, the innovative Bosch SX drive and an elegant design, it can clearly stand out from the competition. In a world where classic e-trekking bikes are often (too) heavy, the new KTM e-bike definitely brings a breath of fresh air into the segment.

The KTM Macina Sport SX positions itself in a segment that is in the shadows of SUV e-bikes and e-mountain bikes. It combines sleek design with low weight and impressive flexibility, proving that modern e-trekking bikes like this are still relevant. The lightweight carbon frame and the Bosch SX motor contribute to a remarkably low overall weight, which is almost comparable to that of non-motorized trekking bikes. This bike is ideal for those who are looking for a sporty and agile riding experience, but don't want to miss out on the support of an e-bike.

Innovative Bosch SX drive

The Bosch SX motor is a highlight of the new KTM e-trekking bike. At just 2kg, it is one of the lightest motors on the market and offers a torque of up to 55Nm. The power of the motor adapts to the cadence and can therefore keep up with more powerful mid-motors even when pedaling faster. The compact Bosch Compact Tube 400 battery ideally complements the bike's lightweight concept. Despite its lower capacity of 400 Wh, it is sufficient for many everyday trips, while the optional range extender offers additional flexibility for longer tours. Without the battery, the KTM Macina Sport SX barely weighs more than a classic trekking bike.

The Bosch SX motor fits perfectly on a sporty e-trekking bike.

The lockable flap can be removed upwards and provides access to the 400 Wh battery in the down tube.

High-quality equipment of the KTM Macina Sport SX

The KTM Macina Sport SX Elite offers solid equipment. The Shimano Cues 10-speed derailleur offers a good range, Schwalbe tires and a Suntour air suspension fork guarantee a comfortable ride on various surfaces. The Bosch Purion 200 control panel with its bright color display and the Shimano 2-piston brakes ensure a safe and comfortable ride. Our test bike only weighs 18,7 kg without pedals – strong!

The Suntour NCX fork can be adjusted to the rider's weight using air pressure. The quick release is no longer entirely up to date.

The price of 4.299 euros initially seems a little high considering the components, but considering the innovative concept with a light carbon frame, it is quite reasonable.

The bike is available in both a classic men's and a trapezoidal frame, while the cheaper aluminum frame models are also available as low entry options.

The KTM Macina Sport SX in practice

On the road, the bike shows what it's made of. It is nimble, responds directly to inputs and offers a sporty, comfortable seating position. Despite the limited battery capacity, the operating range is more than enough for most everyday journeys. On steeper terrain or with a heavy load the radius decreases slightly, but the bike remains comfortable to ride even under these conditions. The combination of suspension fork, ergonomic handles and the coordinated carbon frame ensures a high level of riding comfort.

Conclusion: KTM Macina Sport SX Elite
