Giro d'Italia #21: Merlier equalizes against Milan in Rome

26 May 2024 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Tim Merlier won the final stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Belgian was faster than Jonathan Milan in the mass sprint in Rome and thus equalized the score at 3:3. Tadej Pogacar can be happy about his first overall Giro victory.

Merlier wins on cobblestones in Rome

On the last day of the Giro d'Italia Tim Merlier (Soudal – Quick-Step) to make it 3:3 against jonathan milan (Lidl – Trek) balanced. The Belgian won the mass sprint in Rome on cobblestones after 125 kilometers ahead of his Italian opponent. He was unlucky today because he suffered a defect just eight kilometers from the finish. In order to even get back into the main field, the winner of the points classification had to expend a lot of energy - too much. For second place Caden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck) it should still be enough in the end. The overall victory goes to Dominator Tadej pogacar (UAE). The Slovenian has now completed part one of his mission “Giro/Tour double” successfully mastered. Standing next to him on the podium Daniel Martinez (Bora – hansgrohe) from Colombia and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) from Great Britain. In addition to the Maglia Rosa, Pogacar also wins the blue mountain jersey.
