8 May 2024 by Michael Behringer

Giro d'Italia 2024 Strade Bianche Pogacar

Cycling: The sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia takes the professionals over numerous hills and gravel sections of the Strade Bianche one-day race. We ask ourselves the questions: How difficult is this stage really and when will Tadej Pogacar attack?

How difficult will this gravel stage be?

The 180 kilometer long sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia leads from Viareggio to Rapolano Terme. And it has it all, as you can see from the route profile. There are not only a lot of professionals waiting for them Hill, but also some Gravel passages. We are here in Tuscany. We know the white, dusty streets from the one-day race Strade Bianche. However, here the Tour of Italy only driving on a few unpaved roads. The breakaway group of the day will form on the first 70 flat kilometers. For the first time at this year's Tour of Italy The fight for places in this group will be tough, because the outliers will have a realistic chance of winning the day tomorrow. The climbs after Volterra (8,6 km with 4,6%) and after grotti (3,3 km at 5,0%) are not very demanding, even if the second hill is ridden on gravel. Goes Tadej pogacar (UAE) is not already on the offensive here, there will at most be a small pre-selection, but not yet a decision. This only falls into the wall shortly before the finish Serre di Rapolano (0,7 km with 10,0%).

Velomotion forecast: When will Pogacar attack?

The wall at Serre di Rapolano (0,7 km at 10,0%) includes a 200 meter long section with a 19% steep wall - but without gravel. Nevertheless, the wheat is finally separated from the chaff here. It can be assumed that some sprinters will still be there, but will no longer be able to follow the attacks of their opponents. It will be here at the latest Tadej pogacar (UAE) launched its attack. And if the escape group doesn't win the day, the Slovenian will win his next section here.

* * * Tadej pogacar (UAE)
** Laurence Pithie (Groupama – FDJ), jonathan milan (Lidl – Trek)
* Quinten Hermans (Alpecin – Deceuninck), Mikel Honore (EF Education – EasyPost), Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal – Quick Step)
