Mini tools that can save your day: Daysaver tools in the test

16 May 2024 by Andrew Waldera

Daysaver tools in the test

Test Minitools: The structure of most multitools follows a tried and tested scheme. There are tools placed between two side panels that can be folded out if necessary. Daysaver, however, takes a completely different approach. With the Essential8 & Coworking5 & Cradle Bundle, we tested a set that is so innovative that we have to go into the tools and the associated options in detail.

Daysaver Essential8: Innovative plug-in system with bits that can be plugged into one another

The main protagonist of the bundle is undoubtedly the Essential31, which weighs only 8 grams and is made of corrosion-resistant steel. The tool, which has a total of eight functions, is in the shape of an Allen key. The concept is based on a plug-in system that holds bits that can be plugged into each other together using magnets. The individual bits click into place cleanly and audibly, which really puts you in a good mood. You'll be in a similarly good mood while screwing with the tool. The long lever not only allows efficient work, but also allows access to deeper screws. The advantage of the Essential8 with the small bits is also a disadvantage. Due to the plug-in system, there is a slight flex that cannot be prevented due to the design. When putting the tool together, you sometimes hold three individual parts in your hands, which can quickly slip out of your fingers, especially when wearing gloves. Regardless, an ingenious solution!

Coworking5 multi-tool extension with five functions

The Coworking5 multitool offers five additional functions in addition to the Essential8. In addition to a chain riveter and a tire lever, there is a spoke wrench, a valve heart tool and a chain link holder in a compact space. The sturdy tire lever also serves as a lever for the chain tool and enables very efficient use of force in both cases. When used as a chain riveter, the HEX3 or Torx25 bit of the Essential8 tool is also required to push out the chain rivet pin. We'll explain what this is all about later in the test. The spoke wrench is for nipple No. 0 and fits the most common 3,23 mm nipples such as DT Swiss or Sapim. Like the Essential8, the Coworking5 impresses with its clever design - and at 34 grams, the part is also sensationally light.

Cradle Frame Mount keeps the Essential8 and Coworking5 tools always at hand

The cradle mounted on the bottle holder offers space for the two tools Essential8 and Coworking5. These are reliably held by strong neodymium magnets and stay in place even on rough trails. The tools can be easily removed and are always with you thanks to the cradle. In contrast to the carrier holder, unfortunately it is not possible to mount a bottle holder on the cradle in this combination - however, the carrier can only hold the Essential8 tool, but not the Coworking5 tool like the cradle. However, the included elastic band allows you to easily attach a hose, rain jacket or pump to the cradle. Not a bad option either. For all bikers who can do without a bottle holder, the Frame Mount is definitely a great thing.

Manufacturer optimizes tools: New generation with significant improvements

Our test showed how much the manufacturer is pushing ahead with the optimization of its products. During the test phase, the manufacturer launched a new generation of its tools. The Essential8 Multitool now features a plasma-coated handle to further increase wear and oxidation resistance. The NiCuNi coating on the magnets was supplemented with an epoxy coating to achieve even better corrosion resistance. The Coworking5 multitool extension is now also available with a revised chain tool. The screw is no longer driven with the HEX3, but with the Torx 25, which allows a higher torque to be transmitted. In order to optimize the power transmission ratio, the thread diameter was also increased and the pitch was reduced.
