Tour de France #13: Philipsen wins tough flat stage

July 12, 2024 by Michael Behringer

Philipsen Tour de France

Cycling: Jasper Philipsen has won the 13th stage of the Tour de France. Contrary to expectations, today's race was a real affair with numerous attacks thanks to strong winds.

Philipsen wins ahead of Van Aert and Ackermann

Second stage win for Jasper Phillipsen (Alpecin . Deceuninck). The Belgian won the 165,3-kilometer stage from Agen to Pau, which was characterized by wind edges. In the sprint of a heavily decimated main field, he relegated wout van aert (Visma – Lease a Bike) and Pascal Ackermann (Israel – Premier-Tech) took second and third place. Within the last 1.000 Meters there was a fall, in which among others Arnaud De Lie (Lotto – Dstny). However, many riders were no longer in the first group, as many attacks and wind edges made for an extremely fast and hard race.

Adam Yates in the breakaway group

Anyone who expected another boring stage today was more than surprised by the professional cyclists. Immediately after the start, 21 men were able to break away from the main field. Since Adam Yates (UAE), the GC teams were naturally alarmed. Due to the wind conditions, a dangerous chasing group formed behind them around jonas vingegaard (Visma – Lease a Bike), Tadej pogacar (UAE) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step). However, the British team Ineos Grenadiers was able to close the gap quickly. Together with Soudal – Quick-Step and Jayco – AlUla, they then tried not to let the large breakaway group around Yates get too far away. The Brit was only 6:59 behind in the GC before the start of today's stage.

Roglic, Ayuso & Herrada leave the Tour de France

Half of the Tour de France 2024 is already behind us and some teams now have to rethink their strategy. This applies to the German team Bora – hansgrohe, among others. With Primois Roglic (Bora – hansgrohe) the captain could not compete in today’s stage after yesterday’s crash. Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) had to abandon the Tour dfe France. During the 13th stage, Juan Ayuso (UAE) from the bike. The Spaniard was considered one of the most important helpers for Tadej pogacar (UAE), but tested positive for Corona.

Wind edges continue to provide action

Even after the split peloton had rejoined, the situation did not calm down. There was an attack in the breakaway group, which Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers), Julien bernard (Lidl-Trek), Romain Gregory (Groupama – FDJ) and Magnus Court (Uno-X Mobility) to break away. Their former companions were caught up. 60 kilometers from the finish, Visma – Lease a Bike increased the pace again, which ultimately caused the leading quartet to fall victim. The main field split into several parts again. Not to be seen at the front was, among others, Mark Cavendish (Astana). 40 kilometers from the finish, Richard Carapaz (EF Education – EasyPost) and Tobias Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility). Around 20 kilometers later, however, this duo was caught again. Jasper stuyven (Lidl-Trek), Brent van Moer (Lotto – Dstny) and Fabien Grellier (TotalEnergies).

Numerous attacks are neutralized

However, the trio was not given a big lead. Visma – Lease a Bike wanted to keep the group together in order to finally wout van aert (Visma – Lease a Bike) to win the stage. As Fabien Grellier (TotalEnergies) could no longer follow his companions, was with the two Belgians Jasper stuyven (Lidl – Trek) and Brent van Moer (Lotto – Dstny) again a duo at the front of the race. An attack by Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) and Christophe Laporte (Visma – Lease a Bike) they were caught again. So after all the attacks in Pau it was finally going to come down to a sprint decision.
