The Germans have their gold medal: Niklas Behrens won the U23 World Championship road race. In rainy Zurich, the 20-year-old, who rides for the Lidl – Trek Future Racing Team, prevailed in a two-man sprint against Martin Svrček of the Czech Republic. The two broke away with about ten kilometers to go, catching soloist Jan Christen . The Swiss rider narrowly missed the bronze medal, which went to Belgian Alec Segaert . His compatriot Jarno Widar had to learn a tough lesson. The 18-year-old was, as in recent months, incredibly strong, but – as is typical in his races – led almost the entire race from the front. He ultimately finished seventh behind Isaac del Toro of Mexico.

Muriel Furrer succumbs to her injuries
The Junior World Championship road races were held yesterday. However, the results were overshadowed by a horrific accident. As announced today, Muriel Furrer succumbed to her injuries after a crash. The 18-year-old Swiss rider left the road in a wooded area for reasons that are still unclear. No decision has yet been made as to whether the World Championships will continue as planned tomorrow. Cat Ferguson from Great Britain and Lorenzo Finn from Italy secured the Junior World Championship titles .
