All Tour de France team helmets: The helmet of XDS–Astana – Limar Air Atlas

June 17, 2025 by Caspar Gebel

Limar Air Atlas: magnetic closure and removable UFO

The XDS-Astana helmet, shown here, stands out with its somewhat old-fashioned look, featuring a grid pattern and glossy black side panels. There are also much more understated versions, such as the one entirely in matte white. A striking feature of the Limar Air Atlas is the removable "UFO" fairing at the rear, made of sharp-edged, transparent plastic, which elongates the shape of the helmet while simultaneously reducing the size of the rear air vents.

The numerous ventilation openings at the front are striking.
The plastic part at the rear called “UFO” optimizes the aerodynamics.

This should result in slightly improved aerodynamics, albeit at the expense of ventilation. However, ventilation is still very good with the "UFO" – the 17 vents effectively direct the airflow over your head, making the Limar very comfortable to wear.

Fidlock closure with one-hand operation

The helmet is secured with a Fidlock magnetic closure, which can be closed with one hand. The chin strap padding is somewhat uncommon these days. Limar uses traditional adjustable strap tensioners, which allow the length of the straps in front of and behind the ear to be adjusted separately, although this is always somewhat cumbersome.

The Fidlock closure can be operated with one hand.
With the removable “spoiler” you basically have two helmets in one.

What's striking is that this medium-weight helmet, weighing around 290 grams, is very small. Those who normally need a medium size should choose the Air Atlas in size L; those with a head circumference just over 60 cm will just about fit, even though the manufacturer specifies a maximum size of 62 cm. A fourth size, "XL," would therefore be desirable. At €253,55, the Limar is in the higher price segment; a total of nine color options are available.
