Cycling: Jake Stewart achieved his greatest success on the fifth stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. The Briton won the sprint ahead of Axel Laurance, thus celebrating his first victory at the World Tour level.
Jake Stewart wins, Pascal Ackermann drops out
After 183 kilometers from Saint-Priest to Mâcon, a mass sprint finally decided the day's winner. Before that, the Alpecin-Deceuninck team had failed to shake off the sprinters on the climbs and thus lost the captaincy. Mathieu van der Poel Instead, for the first time in his career, Jake Stewart (Israel – Premier Tech) celebrated a victory at WorldTour level. The Briton beat the Frenchman Axel Laurance (Ineos Grenadiers) and the Norwegian Soren Waerenskjold (Uno-X Mobility) behind. Top favorite jonathan milan (Lidl – Trek) had to settle for fifth place. The stage was also negative for Pascal Ackermann (Israel – Premier Tech). The German crashed early in the race and was forced to abandon the race. Now that his teammate – and actually his lead-out man – won the stage, he now has to worry about his participation and captaincy in the Tour de France.
