Automatic and self-sufficient gear system for everyday bicycles: Shimano Q'AUTO

June 6, 2025 by Andrew Waldera

Product news: A no-go for some, but a maximum gain in comfort and riding safety for others: we're talking about automatic gear shifting on bicycles. Until now, however, fully automatic gear shifting was only possible with advanced e-bikes. With Q'AUTO, Shimano is now introducing an automatic and self-contained gear shifting system for all non-motorized urban, trekking, and gravel bikes.

Shimano continuously develops its internationally renowned bicycle components for all types of leisure and sports bikes, drawing on more than a century of innovation. With this immense wealth of experience behind it, the company now also offers a fully automatic, battery-independent Di2 shifting experience for everyday bikes. Q'AUTO presents itself as an innovative technology specifically developed to get even more people on bikes and make cycling more enjoyable.

Shimano Q'AUTO

With its automatic shifting function, Q'AUTO ensures a truly unique and comfortable riding experience. The battery-free design and adaptive, self-learning software enable a completely new type of bicycle that not only keeps cyclists in the right gear at all times, but also adapts to their riding style and preferences. With over 6.500 possible combinations, Q'AUTO can adapt to every riding style. Of course, the Di2 switch allows for immediate response to automatic shifting should it interrupt your individual "flow."

Q'AUTO is introduced with the Shimano CUES FH-U6060, a FREEHUB rear hub specifically designed for automatic shifting. It incorporates a dynamo function within its hub body. This generates the required energy with every pedal stroke. Three sensors are also located inside the hub—for speed, cadence, and lean angle—from which Q'AUTO uses this information to determine the optimal gear for a specific riding situation. Without a battery, which requires dedicated attention, the bike is ready to ride at any time.

Along with the Shimano CUES FH-U6060 FREEHUB rear hub, the Shimano CUES RD-U8050-SGS/GS rear derailleur and the SW-EN605-R wireless shifter will also be released. Passionate cyclists will be pleased to note that the rear derailleur is compatible with the full range of wireless Shimano Di2 shifters and shift/brake levers for both flat and road handlebars, allowing Q'AUTO to cover a vast range of bike and rider types and riding styles.
