All Tour de France team helmets: The helmet from Intermarché-Wanty – Uvex Surge Aero Mips

June 12, 2025 by Marcus Degen

Uvex Surge Aero Mips: Two in one with subtle styling

The Uvex Surge Aero Mips was introduced during the 2024 Tour de France and immediately worn by Biniam Girmay to two stage wins and the green jersey for best sprinter. Uvex offers two helmets in one, so to speak: The head protection itself comes with an aero cover that largely closes the ventilation openings and is intended to improve aerodynamics. The manufacturer doesn't specify how many watts the cover saves – but the Eritrean sprinter certainly used it, so it can certainly be said to have an effect.

With Aero Cover, there are sufficiently large ventilation openings.
Excess heat can easily escape to the rear of the Uvex.

Faster with Aero Cover

The cover must be clicked onto the helmet with considerable force, and then sits quite firmly and securely, with thin gaps visible between the shell and the helmet. With or without the cover, the Uvex looks understated and almost classic, especially since it's neither overly wide nor particularly long. Especially in white or black, this helmet appears rather unobtrusive, yet stands out in wear tests with its comfortable fit and good ventilation. This is no surprise, given the wide longitudinal grooves held together by cross braces.

When the cover is attached, ventilation naturally suffers somewhat, but the cover doesn't completely close off the wide longitudinal grooves and still allows enough airflow in. The large openings in the lower rear area aren't covered anyway. So, even in warm temperatures, you can benefit from the improved aerodynamics without a significant heat penalty.

Without the Aero Cover, the Uvex is very airy with wide longitudinal grooves.
The head ring fits comfortably and is easily adjustable.

Three sizes, five colors

Available in three sizes, the helmet is height-adjustable to three different positions and, as the name suggests, is equipped with the MIPS inner shell. Weighing in at 274 grams in the medium size, plus 75 grams for the shell, it's not particularly light, but its weight isn't intrusive. In addition to its aerodynamic function, the shell also has the advantage of shielding from cold and rain to a certain extent—so, if you're out and about in inclement weather, it'll be a bit more comfortable and you'll even arrive home a few seconds earlier. Finally, at just under €250, the Uvex Surge Aero Mips isn't particularly expensive either.
