Tour de France #5: Evenepoel wins the time trial confidently

Evenepoel Tour de France

Cycling: Remco Evenepoel once again proved he is the best time trialist in the world. The Belgian won the race against the clock with ease, but missed out on the yellow jersey.

Evenepoel wins, Pogacar takes the yellow jersey

Olympic and world champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) won the 33-kilometer time trial starting and finishing in Caen. On the fifth stage of the Tour de France, the Belgian was 17 and 33 seconds faster than Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE – XRG) and Italian Edoardo Affini (Visma – Lease a Bike), respectively. While he missed out on the yellow jersey, he made up considerable time on his rivals. Tadej Pogacar (UAE – XRG) is the new leader in the general classification. The previous leader, Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck), was unable to keep pace with the leaders in the time trial. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma – Lease a Bike) also lost significant time. However, German Florian Lipowitz (RB – Bora – hansgrohe) put in a strong performance, finishing just 58 seconds behind today's winner.

Jeannière and De Buyst have to abandon the Tour

After yesterday's chaotic crashes, the professionals were spared any serious accidents today. Nevertheless, there are two withdrawals to report. Belgian Jasper De Buyst (Lotto) and Frenchman Emilien Jeannière (TotalEnergies) did not start the time trial. Both riders crashed in the final stages yesterday and, due to their injuries, will not be able to continue the 2025 Tour de France.
