Mavic Comete Ultimate 2 MIPS in the test: Performance and protection from a single source

6 November 2025 by Florian Nowak

Review: Mavic positions the Comete Ultimate 2 MIPS as a fast racing helmet for road cycling and triathlon. According to the manufacturer, it offers aerodynamic advantages while remaining comfortable over long distances and has been updated for the current generation with a MIPS Air Node and a Fidlock magnetic buckle. In our opinion, it's particularly suitable for anyone looking for speed, safety, and comfort in one.

According to the manufacturer, the Mavic Comete Ultimate 2 MIPS was developed in a wind tunnel for high aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining a more classic helmet appearance. At the same time, the manufacturer promises effective helmet cooling, allowing the head to "breathe" even during intense exertion and keeping the temperature on the head under control.

The safety features of the Comete Ultimate 2 MIPS are centered around the integrated MIPS Air Node solution. This particularly lightweight version of MIPS is designed to reduce rotational forces during crashes without adding noticeable bulk or impairing ventilation. The safety and user experience is further enhanced by a Fidlock magnetic buckle, which simplifies opening and closing the chin strap. With this, Mavic combines aerodynamics, thermal management, and state-of-the-art protective technology in the Comete Ultimate 2 MIPS. The Mavic Comete Ultimate 2 MIPS is priced at €199,00.

MVS Shield Photochromic: Large field of vision, adaptable lenses

As a complement to the Mavic Comete helmet, we also had the opportunity to test the MVS Shield Photochromic goggles. In combination with the Comete helmet, the goggles integrate perfectly and offer a great overall package, without the helmet and goggles interfering with each other in any way and causing any uncomfortable pressure.

These semi-rimless performance glasses with a large shield lens offer a wide field of vision thanks to the absence of a lower frame, thus expanding peripheral perception. The photochromic lenses automatically and instantly adjust their tint to changing light conditions, making the glasses suitable for a wide variety of situations.

A more detailed test will be available here shortly.

Of course, we took the time to examine the Mavic Comete Ultimate 2 in combination with the MVS Shield goggles more closely on several rides. Right from the start, it's clear that this is a well-matched duo, with the helmet and goggles perfectly coordinated and offering a good fit together. This prevents the straps and fastening mechanism of the helmet from interfering with the temples of the glasses, which often leads to uncomfortable pressure points or slippage of the helmet or glasses.

And that brings us to the main feature of the Comete Ultimate 2. The fit, in particular, completely won us over. Thanks to the simple yet precise adjustment options and ergonomic handling, the Comete Ultimate fits like a glove in just a few simple steps. The numerous contact points distribute pressure evenly, which, combined with the low weight, almost makes you feel like you're not wearing a helmet at all.

Mavic Comete Ultimate 2

Nevertheless, it sits extremely securely on the head and cannot be easily moved from the desired position. This is, of course, extremely important in an emergency and offers a high degree of protection and safety, but it's also a practical factor. The Mavic helmet doesn't simply slip around while riding, which can be extremely annoying. The MIPS Air Node technology further contributes to the overall safety and comprehensive protection of the helmet.

According to the long-established French manufacturer, the Comete Ultimate 2 MIPS is designed for speed and, thanks to wind tunnel development, is intended to reduce air resistance. Nevertheless, compared to rather bulky-looking aero helmets, it retains an appealing classic shape, which should please road cycling purists.

During development, great emphasis was placed on ventilation, which is noticeable thanks to the large openings at the front. Combined with the comfortable padding, this helps keep you cool even during intense exertion.

Conclusion: Mavic Comete Ultimate 2
