Shimano Saint platform pedal: The best of two worlds

September 17, 2026 by Michael Wahl

Shimano is among the most experienced pedal manufacturers in the cycling industry. Besides their well-known SPD clipless pedals, the Japanese company also has decades of experience with platform pedals, covering a wide range of applications from touring to gravity riding. The Saint name at Shimano represents the component series where robustness and control are paramount. This group is aimed primarily at downhill, freeride, and gravity riders who demand a lot from their equipment.

The PD-G8040, the official name of the Shimano Saint platform pedal, fits this concept perfectly: It combines a robust metal body with a plastic coating that also serves as protection upon contact with the ground. The platform measures 121 x 110 mm, weighs 395 g, and has a slightly concave shape. This ensures a secure footing on the pedal, while the axle doesn't protrude from the platform. Pins provide additional grip. Shimano offers various pin positions and includes replacement pins in different lengths. A unique feature: Unlike many other platform pedals, the pins are not height-adjustable via a thread. Instead, the desired grip is determined by choosing the appropriate pin length. Incidentally, all individual parts are available as spare parts.

For those who can't decide between metal and composite platform pedals, the Saint PD-G8040 is the perfect choice. The combination of a metal body and plastic shell performs surprisingly well in everyday use. The metal body provides stiffness and stability, while the plastic elements act as protection against impacts with rocks. We tested the pedal over an extended period and also monitored its wear. The PD-G8040 does get scratched, of course, which is unavoidable with frequent trail use. However, this means it doesn't show wear and tear as quickly as many colored aluminum pedals, where impacts with rocks quickly damage the surface and wear off the color.

Even more important, however, are the riding characteristics. On fast and technically demanding trails, the Saint inspires confidence and provides a very reliable foothold. At the same time, the foot can be easily repositioned as the riding situation changes. The platform offers a successful balance of stiffness and a certain degree of flex without feeling spongy. For those who want more grip, additional pins can be mounted. This allows the pedal to be easily adapted to individual riding styles and shoes.
