Giveaway/Product News: With a wider yet lighter aluminum rim, a redesigned 370 hub, and the option to integrate the Trackr Speed sensor (developed in collaboration with Wahoo) directly into the rear hub, DT Swiss has significantly revised its E 1800 Spline wheelset. The wheelset aims to bridge the gap between classic endurance road cycling and increasingly versatile all-road use. We're giving away one DT Swiss E 1800 Spline 20 wheelset including a Wahoo Trackr Speed sensor.
The lines between road bikes and all-road bikes are becoming increasingly blurred. Wider tires, lower air pressures, and routes that don't necessarily end at the asphalt are now commonplace for many road cyclists. DT Swiss is addressing this development with the new generation of the E 1800 Spline.
Officially, the Swiss manufacturer continues to list the model in its Endurance category. However, the new rim geometry with a wider internal width and ASTM Class 2 certification expands its potential applications beyond purely asphalt riding.
New rim: wider and lighter at the same time
The focus of the redesign is the aluminum rim. While the previous E 1800 Spline 23 featured a 23 mm deep rim, a 22 mm internal width, and a 26 mm external width, the new generation comes with a rim that is only 20 mm deep. At the same time, the internal width increases to 24 mm, and the external width to 28 mm. The rim retains its classic hook design and is tubeless compatible.
DT Swiss describes the rim as having a new, more angular shape designed to both reduce weight and increase durability for versatile use. The wider internal rim width is particularly well-suited to modern, higher-volume road bike tires and underscores the rim's focus on endurance and all-road riding.
The most remarkable feature is the weight reduction. According to the manufacturer, the new front wheel weighs 757 grams. The rear wheel weighs 870 grams with a SRAM XDR freehub or 893 grams in the Shimano road version. This brings the total weight of the complete wheelset to 1.627 grams.
For comparison: The previous E 1800 Spline 23 had a front wheel weighing 829 grams and a Shimano rear wheel weighing 958 grams. With a comparable Shimano configuration, the weight drops from 1.787 to 1.650 grams – a difference of 137 grams. At the same time, the rim is two millimeters wider.
370 hub now with Ratchet Ln 36 Sl
DT Swiss has also made improvements to the center of the wheelset. The DT Swiss 370 hub is still used, but the rear wheel now features a Ratchet Ln 36 Sl hub.
The Ratchet Ln system transmits power via two toothed discs whose teeth mesh simultaneously. Within the DT Swiss portfolio, Ratchet Ln represents the entry point into ratchet freehub systems. The new E 1800 uses a 36-tooth version; the previous E 1800 Spline 23 370 hub used the Ratchet Ln 18.
Braking is exclusively via disc brakes with Center Lock mounts. DT Swiss uses a 12x100mm thru-axle at the front and a 12x142mm thru-axle at the rear. Shimano Road and SRAM XDR drivetrain options are available.
DT Swiss also uses its own spokes. Depending on the position, DT Aero Comp Wide Straightpull and DT New Aero II Straightpull spokes are used. The wheels are laced in a two-cross pattern and built with DT ProLock Squorx ProHead aluminum nipples.
Wahoo Trackr Speed: DT Swiss and Wahoo bring the sensor to the hub.
Another innovation concerns less the wheelset itself and more its digital expandability. The rear wheel of the E 1800 Spline is prepared for the new DT Swiss Trackr Speed by Wahoo. Unlike classic speed sensors, which are attached to the hub with a rubber band or a separate mount, the Spline version of the Trackr Speed is designed to integrate seamlessly into the rear hub. However, the sensor is not included as standard with the regular E 1800 Spline; it is available as a compatible add-on.
Technically, the system is based on the Wahoo Trackr Speed. DT Swiss states that its own sensor is functionally based on this model, but features a housing specifically adapted to the hub and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery instead of a button cell. A 3-axis accelerometer detects the rotation of the rear hub and calculates speed and distance traveled from this data. This is particularly advantageous where speed determination via GPS alone can be inaccurate – for example, in tunnels, densely populated areas, or with poor satellite reception in the mountains.
The data is transmitted via ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy, allowing the sensor to connect to compatible bike computers, smartphones, and sports watches. Weighing just 23 grams, the Trackr Speed is virtually weightless. DT Swiss claims a battery life of up to 94 hours. Charging is done via a magnetic connection, with the cable using USB-C on the other end. The sensor also features an LED to indicate connection and battery status and meets IPX7 protection standards. DT Swiss offers the sensor for both Spline and Dicut hubs. The recommended retail price starts at €59.
The DT Swiss E 1800 Spline 20 is moving more towards being an all-road bike.
With the new DT Swiss E 1800 Spline, the manufacturer has made several key changes to its entry-level wheelset for the endurance segment. The most striking feature is not so much a single technical innovation, but rather the combination of reduced weight and a wider rim.
With a 24 mm internal rim width, tubeless compatibility, and ASTM Category 2 certification, this wheelset is well-suited to modern endurance bikes and riding conditions that include rougher roads and paved side paths in addition to asphalt. The maximum system weight remains at 120 kg. DT Swiss also approves the wheels for use with compatible e-bikes up to a maximum speed of 32 km/h or 250 watts.
The Trackr Speed complements this concept on the digital side. It doesn't change the actual function of the wheel, but creates a clean solution for riders who want to record speed and distance independently of a constant GPS connection.
In terms of price, DT Swiss continues to position the E 1800 Spline relatively low within its own road portfolio: The recommended retail price for the wheelset starts at 399 euros, the Trackr Speed costs separately from 59 euros.
