HillMate train system: Compact and powerful

September 28, 2026 by Michael Wahl

Behind the HillMate is Mobilitätshelden, a company based in Lower Franconia. They develop mobility and safety products for children and are known, among other things, for their mySTOPY brake assist system. With the HillMate, Mobilitätshelden offers a compact tow system that brings tired children, and if needed, adults, home on their bicycles.

The HillMate is housed in a compact 61 x 61 x 39 mm casing made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Inside is a self-retracting Dyneema rope that extends approximately 2,2 to 2,5 meters, depending on the manufacturer. This robust rope, originally developed for mountaineering, can withstand a tensile load of up to 150 kg, according to the manufacturer. The rope also features reflective elements, which can enhance safety in low-light conditions. Weighing in at around 130 grams, the entire system remains pleasantly lightweight. After use, the rope retracts automatically into the casing for neat and tidy storage.

The HillMate makes a high-quality impression right from the first touch. The housing is cleanly finished, and the pulley system also appears robust. The HillMate offers more mounting options than many quick-release systems. The housing can be attached horizontally or vertically under the saddle or to the seatpost using one or two straps. Alternatively, it can also be mounted directly to the handlebars of the child's bicycle. While this takes a little longer than a quick-release system, it offers significantly more flexibility in terms of mounting position. This is particularly practical for mountain bikers with a dropper post. When the HillMate is mounted horizontally, the seatpost can still be lowered without any problems. However, the housing cannot be completely and absolutely securely fixed with the straps in this position. Therefore, it starts to rattle on the saddle on rough trails. Those who are sensitive to this and prefer absolute silence on their bike should remove the HillMate for technical descents. The actual pulling mechanism, however, is flawless, whether mounted on the seatpost or handlebars. The rope is quick to pull out and attach, and then the child can simply be pulled along. The pulling force is easily sufficient to tackle even longer climbs together. After use, the rope is retracted and the HillMate is ready for the next use.
