Test aero racing bikes with disc 2019: Key data and test field
In recent years, modern aero racing bikes have become the new all-rounders for asphalt lovers. The high-speed bikes used to be real specialists – fast, yes, but usually quite heavy, uncomfortable and all in all more a case for “real” racers. However, major advances in carbon processing were able to largely compensate for the weight and comfort disadvantages and modern disc brakes make the bikes easy to control for "everyone". When we invited you to our test, we didn't set an upper price limit: we deliberately wanted to put the top models from the respective manufacturers in the race. All bikes have their disc brakes in common and – no surprise given the requirements – a carbon frame.
Test aero road bikes with disc 2019: test track and rider
The test playground for our high-speed bikes was south of the Alps in beautiful South Tyrol. Streets and lanes even further, far away from the roaring car traffic, they constantly wind their way up the picture-book mountains of the region. If you don't take the white giants under your wheels, you can often expect beautiful plateaus after the ascent, on which the bikes can not only confirm their speed qualities, but also have to brave the proverbial constantly shifting winds. Our racing bike editor and Lotto-Kernhaus pro Flo Nowak sat on the saddle of the test bikes.
Test aero road bikes with disc 2019: That stood out
Following the current trend, all of our bikes have relatively wide tires. 25mm wide tires were mounted everywhere, on the Specialized even the in-house turbo in 26mm. What seemed unthinkable on such wheels a few years ago makes a lot of sense according to the findings from recent years: Wide tires also harmonize better aerodynamically with wide rims, the additional volume improves comfort and also reduces rolling resistance on roads that are not quite perfect. The integrated aero cockpits of modern bikes are just as unsurprising, but at least as noteworthy. Numerous manufacturers have now developed their own solutions here: Scott, Specialized, Trek or Giant perfectly match the handlebars and stem to the overall system. Other manufacturers often rely on the Vision Metron Cockpit. Differences? Present but marginal.
