Best list of backpacks with back protector

Test: Of course, no trail backpack should be missing on a day tour or the next home trail round in the local forest. But which backpack is the right one for me? We tested ten different products and paid attention to back protectors, comfort and a few other details.

Backpacks with back protector 2021 on test:

The criteria

What actually makes the perfect trail backpack? We asked ourselves this question when we tested the 10 models and came to the conclusion that the following criteria are important: storage space, fit, protectors, hydration system and workmanship.

Sufficient storage space is important! Since we are out and about in all weathers, we take tools and drinks with us, of course, as well as spare clothing, because nobody enjoys sports when they are wet and freezing.

Of course, the bag has to sit on the back, distribute the weight comfortably over the shoulders and hips and must not interfere with practicing the most beautiful sport in the world.

Why is a protector necessary? Not everyone rides rough trails or rides at high speeds, putting themselves at greater risk of falling. However, mistakes also happen on the street, on the curb, on the usual after-work ride, or in the most unexpected moment, so extra protection never hurts.

Most manufacturers nowadays offer the option of stowing a hydration bladder or include it in the delivery. But is the placement of the bladder well resolved, is the drinking tube easy to attach and is it comfortable to use as a left-hander?

How did we test?

Just like bicycles, clothing and similar products, we have taken the backpacks with us on our home trails and in the Bike Park Geißkopf, because in practice it is always clear whether a product keeps what it promises. We paid attention to the wearing comfort, the workmanship, the drinking system and the storage space. The latter was quite easy to check, as we were often on the road with camera equipment, spare parts, extra clothing and tools, and it quickly became clear which product was reaching its limits.

One of the most important criteria for us were the back protectors. We paid attention to the processing, multi-shock capability, TÜV certification and the flexibility of the material. Why is flexibility important? A hard protector does not hug the shape of the back and thus prevents the wearing comfort we want.

Since the backpacks were in daily use with us, had to be taken out on the trails in wind and weather and have experienced normal everyday editorial work, we were also able to pay attention to the workmanship and signs of wear. There were plus points for sustainable production and the use of environmentally friendly materials.
